Today’s corporate environment requires both a macro and micro understanding of how business processes fit together, and for MBA graduate Eric Edmonds, the curriculum at Bauer provided a well-rounded understanding of how to add value to an organization, regardless of the task or assignment. Edmonds now works for Water Standard, a global water treatment specialist that delivers innovative desalination, water-based enhanced oil recovery and produced water solutions to the onshore and offshore oil and gas industry.
Q: What was the job search process like for you?
A: Unpredictable. At the end of the day it comes down to knowing what you want to do, and seeking the right opportunity that quickly exposes you to different functional roles within any organization. From those experiences, I believe you can better define the path you intend to pursue.
Q: What skills from your Bauer courses have been most applicable in your job?
A: My courses at Bauer have been immensely helpful so far. I have done a lot of work in business development, marketing, supply chain and often working with project teams in engineering projects. Courses like Operations Strategy, Financial Accounting, Marketing, Managerial Finance, Business Law and Strategic Management all added up to give me a unique perspective and able to make practical contributions in my role. For example, I think that a grasp of what to look for in financial statements, SCC filings and 10K Reports all come in handy with a simple task like high-level research for business managers. Knowing which marketing channels to pursue and how complex supply chain processes affect a company’s bottom-line helps with procurement tasks, and offering commercial input to technical projects.
Q: What do you think gave you an advantage in the job market over grads from other schools?
A: A well-rounded understanding of how to add value to a business, regardless of the task or assignment. Most employers usually identify individuals with a broad [and useful] knowledge and the willingness to learn. I believe this intellectual versatility was especially critical as many organizations have evolved in matrix structures, and with roles with overlapping tasks, because different people may rely on you for very different reasons.
Q: What advice would you give to graduating students currently looking for work?
A: Focus on developing and marketing your transferable skills. Show prospective employers that you’re ready and willing to learn the ropes in any industry. Think about how you can add value, irrespective of the functional role you are in. Most importantly, be persistent and positive.
