First Week of Business a Success for Start-Up
Two alumni from the C. T. Bauer College of Business are looking to fuel the future with their innovative tech start-up. FuelMe is an on-demand gas delivery service that launched June 1 with a pilot program on the University of Houston campus.
Wisam Nahhas (BBA ’11) and Nour Baki (BBA ’13) conceived their business in 2012, with support from Bauer College’s Wolff Center for Entrepreneurship.
The idea? Customers first download a mobile app (available on iOS and Android) and register with FuelMe. They can then request fuel through the app, indicating their location and how long they’ll be there. A certified fueler from the FuelMe team will fill up the car, and once the transaction is complete, the customer is emailed a receipt. (Click here to see the FAQ page on the FuelMe website for more details.)
The business model leverages the trend among consumers for on-demand delivery service, with plans to partner with universities, airports and other organizations that have large populations of potential users in close proximity.
“No one likes going to the gas station, and with FuelMe, you’ll never have to waste time there again,” Baki added.
And so far, customers seem to like FuelMe. June 1 kicked off their service at the University of Houston through a partnership with UH Auxiliary Services, registering 400 users on campus, using about 600 gallons of fuel. In the past three days, they have conducted 40 fill ups.
“This is only the start,” Nahhas said. “We expect this number to continue to grow as it has done already.”
The company pitched FuelMe last week during a special UH-only casting call with “Shark Tank” for potential investment opportunities. And, as the pilot program at UH continues to grow, they plan to target larger corporate clients to bring FuelMe to even more customers.
“The way we fill up gas hasn’t changed in 100 years, and I think it is about time we change the way we refuel. We think this is the best alternative to a gas station,” Baki said.
