On Bauer Business Focus — A conversation on staying relevant in a growing niche market with Andrew Schneider, business reporter for KUHF 88.7 FM.

From humble beginnings in 1993 to leading one of the most popular craft beer companies in the Houston area, Saint Arnold’s Brewing Company founder Brock Wagner let his passion for brewing, and beer, take his brewery to the next level. Wagner stopped by Bauer Business Focus recently to discuss the growing popularity of craft beers in recent years.

“I started brewing in college. The Resident Adviser in my dorm taught me how to home brew,” Wagner said. “I continued brewing after college, and after working for about six years in an unrelated career, I realized I wanted to do what I was passionate about, and I was passionate about brewing beer.”

What was once a small niche market is now becoming a growing industry across the nation. Wagner says he has noticed several factors causing this rise in popularity in the past 19 years of his business.

“I think what we’re seeing is a combination of factors. I think the brewers that have been around a long time have been educating people about craft beer, and I think it takes a while for that to sink in to the consciousness of the greater public,” Wagner added. “Another factor is our customers used to be in their thirties to sixties, and now we started noticing people coming on the tours are in their twenties. I realized that beer was a wide spectrum of flavors to the younger generation, and they are willing to try a lot of different types of beers.”
