On Bauer Business Focus — A conversation on how the Houston community is helping to rebuild Joplin with Andrew Schneider, business reporter for KUHF 88.7 FM.
On May 22, 2011, a catastrophic EF5 tornado hit Joplin, Mo., taking more than 150 lives, injuring hundreds and destroying thousands of homes and buildings. It also fractured the landscape of the city and opened the door to a massive rebuilding and recovery operation.
Costa Bajjali, president and co-founder of Wallace Bajjali Development Partners L.P., stopped by Bauer Business Focus recently to discuss what his Sugar Land-based development firm is doing to help the city rebuild.
“There’s not a guidebook on how to rebuild a city, so we worked with several of our partners on what we envisioned the redeveloped area would look like,” Bajjali said. “The citizens would like to not only rebuild the city, but build it better than what it was before.”
As Bajjali and his team move forward with the reconstruction of residential and commercial properties, they hope to rebuild more than structures.
“We are trying to rebuild the 7,000 residential units that were lost, as well as building a park on the path of the tornado so the citizens have a place for a memorial for those who lost their lives and at the same time an amenity that everyone can use.”
