On Bauer Business Focus—A conversation about adult employment services with Houston Public Media News 88.7 Business Reporter Andrew Schneider.
Eva Aguirre, CEO of The Center, a private not for profit agency serving persons with developmental and intellectual disabilities, recently stopped by Bauer Business focus to discuss how The Center’s services have evolved over time, from who they serve to how they do it.
The Center has been in Houston for over 65 years and began its services with children and later moved toward more exclusive adult services.
“We were the first vocational training facility in Houston,” Aguirre said. “It was 1962 when we started focusing on giving young adults with disabilities the training they would need for community employment. Since that time, we’ve held steady that every person who wants to work should work. Whether it’s in a work center, or an integrated community setting.”
Many of the organization’s clients work for Comcast, food wholesalers, oil field services or medical suppliers in start-to-finish work centers. The center also provides other services, such as an adult activity center for clients that are not interested in or their multiple disabilities would prohibit them from working.
“It allows families to take are of family needs knowing that their loved one is being taken care of,” Aguirre said. “We also have residential programs, with about 28 group homes in the city.”
