Everyday Experiences Among Black Professionals

Published on June 2, 2021

New research is shining a light on the lives of Black professionals. Professor Curtis Wesley with the Bauer College of Business at the University of Houston explains what this new data has found.

“The world is turbulent, and the workplace is no different. Many of your black colleagues suffer in silence to inequitable treatment. Research shows marginalization and social isolation are everyday experiences among black managers.”

“They also face challenges when leading because of violations of norms and expectations related to who can lead. This reflects in their performance evaluations and the discretionary work of their employees.”

“What can be done to support your black colleagues? Active, structured mentoring is shown to assist managers in performing better. Visibly support managers by backing their authority to make critical decisions. Actively broaden their network by intentionally bridging social ties to other important stakeholders. You can be an ally!”
