On Bauer Business Focus — A conversation on bridging the financial literacy gap with Andrew Schneider, business reporter for KUHF 88.7 FM.
As companies begin to get rid of personal pension plans, young professionals are finding they are lacking financial essentials to prepare for their future , says John Lopez, clinical assistant professor at the University of Houston C. T. Bauer College of Business.
Lopez, an organizer and guest speaker at the April 14 UH Bauer College Financial Symposium that promotes financial literacy to the Houston community, stopped by Bauer Business Focus recently to promote awareness for financial illiteracy.
“I think students are aware that they need to do something about their financial responsibilities, but they haven’t been exposed to the fundamentals of finances in order to carry out those goals,” Lopez said.
The symposium is open to current UH students and the Houston community, K-12 principals, teachers and students, and non-profits offering financial information and services. Personal finance experts will discuss topics including paying for college, managing your credit and how to manage your savings.
“Our mission at the Bauer College is to teach students to be more financially literate so that they can successfully manage their funds and save for their future.”
