On Bauer Business Focus — A conversation on green building with Andrew Schneider, business reporter for KUHF 88.7 FM.
The University of Houston Gerald D. Hines College of Architecture is focusing on sustainable design for local companies by combining faculty research and student innovation through its Green Building Components Initiative.
Joseph Meppelink, Director of Applied Research at the college, stopped by Bauer Business Focus recently to discuss how the initiative is bringing new opportunities for architecture students and Houston businesses.
“It’s no secret right now that this is a tough climate to get a job in the building industry,” Meppelink said. “Building has really pulled back in this recession, so architecture students are really welcoming an opportunity in green building technology.”
Nancy Sutley, chair of The Council on Environmental Quality, recently visited the college, to get a better understanding of seeing how the program is handling energy consumption in buildings, Meppelink added.
“If we look 15 years out, a lot of these decisions work, not because they’re green, but because they improved the bottom line.”
