On Bauer Business Focus — A conversation on the legacy of George Mitchell with Andrew Schneider, business reporter for KUHF 88.7 FM.
George Mitchell, businessman, real estate developer and philanthropist, passed away on Friday, July 26, 2013, leaving behind a legacy in the oil and gas and real estate industry.
Joseph Pratt, Cullen Professor of Business and History at the University of Houston, stopped by Bauer Business Focus recently to discuss how Mitchell changed the world of real estate and hydraulic fracturing in Texas.
“Mitchell’s company is in the lead of putting different processes together in what is the modern hydraulic fracturing industry,” Pratt said. “He will be seen historically as the father of modern hydraulic fracturing.”
Mitchell also developed the first-of-its-kind master-planned community The Woodlands, north of Houston.
“Mr. Mitchell came to care very much about sustainability in the early Woodlands development. He saw The Woodlands as a new way of living and allowed people to live more pleasant lives over a long-term,” Pratt added. “Almost everything he did he thought in the long-term. He was an intellectual businessman, and sustainability to him was a really practical combination of energy, environment and economy.”
