As the holidays mark the winding down of another year, employers are utilizing that time to ramp up their hiring pool for the next year.

Juliana Ashley, career coach at Houston non-profit Job Search 101 (JS 101), stopped by Bauer Business focus to discuss why the month of December is a prime time to find employment. JS 101 provides free education and training to help assist the unemployed.

“Most people want to pack it in during the holiday. It’s naturally a time when people are taking vacations, they’re going out of town, their kids are out of school,” Ashley said. “So really keeping the momentum going is what’s difficult for people who are looking for jobs, but it’s actually the best time to be looking and to be active.”

Ashley encourages job seekers to stay productive by attending social events and reaching out to businesses for information, interviews or just to touch base with a holiday greeting card. The candidates who are at events talking to companies are essentially laying a foundation in order to get hired after the start of the year.

“January is actually the strongest hiring month, so they do a lot of this ground work in Dec. to get ready for the hiring season,” Ashley said.

According to Ashley, the job market was good last year and remains good as 2014 comes to a close. Despite the oil industry slowing down their hiring efforts, she indicates that Houston offers strong hiring in other industries including healthcare, education and construction.

“There’s a lot of jobs out there still and there’s a lot of temporary jobs,” Ashley said.
