“We don’t have land use controls that other cities use, so we have this sort of 'every man for himself' kind of mentality, which is great because it’s created a strong and vibrant city," said Kinder Baumgardner, managing principal of SWA group.

On Bauer Business Focus — A conversation on improving the city of Houston’s infrastructure with Andrew Schneider, business reporter for KUHF 88.7 FM.

As the city of Houston continues to grow, both in population and size, its needs for community spaces, improved roads, and commercial and residential buildings increases, as well.

Kinder Baumgardner, managing principal of SWA Group, stopped by Bauer Business Focus recently to discuss what his landscape architecture firm is doing to improve Houston’s foundation.

“If you look at Discovery Green in downtown Houston, that is a great example of infrastructure,” Baumgardner said. “It’s not just pipes and how we deal with storm water; it’s also thinking about the open space system landscape infrastructure and how that influences and how that changes development pattern.”

Baumgardner and his team hope not only to shape commercial property with areas like Discovery Green, but with residential areas as well.

“We don’t have land use controls that other cities use,  so we have this sort of ‘every man for himself’ kind of mentality. It’s created a strong and vibrant city but you lose a certain amount of control. We can use infrastructure to add some layers of knowledge so that you have a better idea of how to develop your property.”
