On Bauer Business Focus — A conversation on the legacy of former Bauer Dean Arthur Warga with Andrew Schneider, business reporter for KUHF 88.7 FM.
Arthur D. Warga, the Judge James A. Elkins Professor of Finance and former dean of the University of Houston C. T. Bauer College of Business, passed away on Sunday, Aug. 7, 2011, at the age of 58, after a lengthy and valiant battle with brain cancer.
Latha Ramchand, interim dean of UH Bauer, and Ed Blair, chair of the college’s Department of Marketing & Entrepreneurship, stopped by Bauer Business Focus to discuss the legacy that Warga left for students, faculty, staff and the community during his time at Bauer.
“I think he recognized that unless there is community outreach in everything we do, while we may think we’re excellent, the community is not going to perceive us in that fashion,” Ramchand said. “Programs that bring in students from high schools so that they become aware of what the business world is like started under Arthur. He made it possible for advisors to think along those lines and he made possible setting up of programs of that kind.”
Warga was recognized for his work in the classroom with the MidCon Teaching Excellence Award, given to honor an outstanding teacher in Bauer College’s Executive MBA program. He taught Corporate Finance, Fixed Income Security Analysis and doctoral seminars.
“I would say his legacy can be seen in the development of the Bauer College and the services today that we’re able to provide students,” Blair said. “If you come over to our campus and look around the buildings and see what’s going on with the energy of the students, that’s his legacy.”
