Virtual happy hours and regular family video calls have become commonplace. But Professor Jaana Porra with the Bauer College of Business at the University of Houston asks how does technology impact human connection?

“During the pandemic, physical isolation and social distancing left many of us feeling down. We now use technology to interact with friends, family and the rest of the world, but long to be out in the world, meeting people we love and people we don’t even know.”

“Living with through technology this way impacts our own humanness and how we interact with others. An important part of being human is to mingle with others in shared spaces inside and outdoors.”

“Even though technology allows us to connect when physical contact is not possible, creating in-person bonds is a vital and necessary part of feeling human.”
