On Bauer Business Focus—A conversation about turning a passion into a business with Houston Public Media News 88.7 Business Reporter Andrew Schneider.
Houston is known for its energy and medical industries, but the city is full of gems of another kind – food.
Heather Davis, owner of Sweet Luxuries Bakery, opened her own bakery in 2010 after discovering her passion for baking while working as a teacher. She baked cookies, cakes and pralines for colleagues and demand began to grow. Davis stopped by Bauer Business Focus recently to discuss how she turned her passion into a business.
“I knew I had something when my colleagues would request my baked goods and they were willing to pay for them,” Davis said. “That’s when I decided, you know what? I think I have something here and let’s go ahead and make this into a full-fledged business.”
While she began her business in 2010, Davis graduated from the C. T. Bauer College of Business at the University of Houston Microfinance Certificate Program to grow her business in December of 2013.
“[The program] paired us with students earning their MBA from the University of Houston and they taught us how to create a business plan,” Davis said. “We were given so much information. It was almost too good to be true.”
