On Bauer Business Focus — A conversation on what lies ahead for the Houston restaurant industry with Andrew Schneider, business reporter for KUHF 88.7 FM.

As food trucks, burger joints, fine dining establishments and eateries open up all over the city of Houston, the restaurant industry is showing no signs of slowing down.

Greater Houston Restaurant Association President Reggie Coachman stopped by Bauer Business Focus recently to discuss what is in store for the industry in 2013.

“The restaurant industry is one of the leading indicators of the economy, particularly when you look at the lower and mid-price ranges,” Coachman said. “Folks tend to start spending money beginning with fast food and ultimately, the rest of the economy tends to see an upswing.”

Although the restaurant industry has seen an upswing in service since 2008, they are many challenges ahead in 2013, according to Coachman.

“Government issues will be some of the industry’s challenges ahead with decisions to be made about how folks handle healthcare and what effect that has on the unit level of economics. There will also be discussions around issues about debit cards and credit cards.”
