On Bauer Business Focus — A conversation on changing energy prices with Andrew Schneider, business reporter for KUHF 88.7 FM.
Houstonians know that from the months of June through August (and oftentimes into September), temperatures of 100+ are normal. And, as the thermometer rises and thermostats drop, energy costs creep ever higher.
Shane McLaughlin (MBA ’09) is a manager for CenterPoint Energy Mass Markets. He visited Bauer Business Focus recently to discuss how his business TrueCost (a service of CenterPoint) can help Houstonians find the optimum electrical plan.
“Electric companies post prices by kilowatt hour, and the problem with that is that the fees that are in addition to those rates can distort those prices,” McLaughlin said. “There’s no other industry where a customer would shop for something and whatever price they’re quoted could be off. We said, ‘We can do better than that.’ By looking at how they use electricity and the fees and charges in the plans, we do the math for the customer and make the price comparison.”
McLaughlin attributes his time in the Bauer MBA program as the key factor in driving the success of TrueCost.
“I got a great deal of value out of my MBA at Bauer. I would say my finance classes were very helpful when we were developing the business plan for the startup because you have to articulate to your CEO why this is a good deal and those classes helped me in that process.”
