On Bauer Business Focus — A conversation on the growth of supply chain management at UH Bauer College with Andrew Schneider, business reporter for KUHF 88.7FM.
One of the fastest growing majors for undergraduate students at the University of Houston C. T. Bauer College of Business is supply chain management, a program bolstered in the past two years by Victor Wayhan, a clinical assistant professor who has more than a decade of experience working in the industry.
Wayhan visited Bauer Business Focus recently to talk about the growth of the program and the national recruiters who are beginning to take notice of UH Bauer supply chain students.
“We’ve gone from having 45 majors in supply chain (in 2008) to 330 majors or minors in the program now,” he said. “We’ve just had phenomenal growth, and it’s been a pretty exciting ride.”
The college has also established relationships with recruiters from companies like Schlumberger, Lyondell and Chevron, which has added UH Bauer to its list of only four universities nationwide where it recruits undergraduate supply chain students.
Wayhan also serves as faculty advisor to APICS, the college’s student organization for supply chain management, which has also seen extraordinary growth recently and is the largest of its kind in the nation.
Until recently, he said, many students may not have thought of supply chain as a possible major for pursuing a business degree, but the field in general is seeing a surge in job opportunities as companies restructure their organizations to focus on the supply chain, or business process that takes an item from raw material all the way to final assembly and distribution, and ultimately disposal.
“You had vertical integration of the supply chain in the old days,” Wayhan said. “Now, you’ve got networks of companies involved in the supply chain. Companies like HP and Dell have dozens or hundreds of suppliers in their chain.”
Students interested in pursuing a career in supply chain should be both analytical decision makers and communicators who can work well with people in different teams and across companies, he added.
