On Bauer Business Focus — A conversation on the International Conference on Partial Least Squares and Related Methods with Andrew Schneider, business reporter for KUHF 88.7 FM.
This week, for the first time, a global academic research conference will be held in North America. The destination? Houston, thanks to conference co-chairs representing the University of Houston.
Wynne Chin is a professor in the Department of Decision & Information Sciences at the Bauer College of Business at UH and one of the co-chairs of the 7th International Conference on Partial Least Squares and Related Methods. The conference will be held on May 19-22, bringing together experts and practitioners in the area from all across the globe to meet and collaborate.
Chin visited Bauer Business Focus recently to discuss the upcoming conference and the diversity this broad topic brings.
“This conference is really quite unique,” he said. “It incorporates people from every discipline because it looks at heavy duty statistical analysis and it looks at big complex sets of data and how to apply them for whatever problem you have.”
The statistical tool has big business impact, Chin added.
“By using Partial Squares analysis, we can take any type of data and reduce to indexes to rate what you need. It can be used to determine education systems, graduation rates compared with job success and it is even being used now to look into the consumer confidence in the U.S. so there are a lot of areas that this research can be used and why this conference is so important.”
