Upcoming Distinguished Entrepreneur Speakers Series Will Feature Rod Canion (MEng ’68), Former CEO and Co-Founder of Compaq
The Cyvia and Melvyn Wolff Center for Entrepreneurship at UH Bauer College will present former CEO and co-founder of Compaq Computers Rod Canion as the special guest of the Distinguished Entrepreneur Speaker Series (DESS) at 6 p.m. on March 5 in the Cullen Performance Hall on the University of Houston campus.
“A DESS speaker is an individual who can significantly contribute to the education of the audience in the field of entrepreneurship,” said WCE Director Daniel Steppe. “They value an individual who has become a major entrepreneurial success while maintaining his essence as a real person of integrity. That is Rod Canion.”
Canion (MEng ’68) helped set the record for the largest first-year sales in the history of American business and reached the Fortune 500 as well as the $1 billion revenue mark faster than any other company in history, Steppe said.
“Mr. Canion has lead and made Compaq a major entrepreneurial success,” Steppe said. “Compaq was also the founder of the entire personal computer industry across the globe. Mr. Canion, as a distinguished alumnus, is a person who has built upon his education at the University of Houston.”
The WCE holds the speaker series to showcase the stories of individuals who have overcome obstacles and tackled challenges in order to achieve significant entrepreneurial success. Previous speakers include famed Houston restaurateur Johnny Carrabba and WESCO International Chairman and CEO Roy W. Haley.
“A (DESS speaker) is an individual that the audience can relate to and leave the speech with the idea that the speaker was successful,” Steppe said. “They are a real person that they can connect to and say, ‘I can do that too.’”
