Houston Entrepreneurs Gain Opportunities With Microfinance Program
20 percent of Houstonians live in high poverty neighborhoods and over nine percent live on less than $2 a day. In an attempt to combat Houston’s poverty problem, Bauer College’s microfinance program formed to empower aspiring local entrepreneurs from underserved areas by providing financial and entrepreneurship education, services and capital investment.
The 12-week program, which includes creating a business plan and financial literacy training, concludes by awarding a microfinance certificate at a graduation ceremony on Dec. 6. Graduates transition into an incubator lead by Bauer graduate student organization Microfinance Initiative (MFI), who aid them obtaining small business loans and launching their business.
Bauer Professor Saleha Khumawala, who is founding director of the microfinance program, is available to discuss how microfinance strengthens the local economy.
