Sales students from the C. T. Bauer College of Business recently placed in the top 10 at the 2016 National Collegiate Sales Competition, continuing a longstanding tradition of recognition among the best in the United States for the college’s Program for Excellence in Selling.

Bauer students Lauren Cuevo and Naomi Cosman claimed a top 10 team finish along with team alternate Corey Krusemen. Cuevo also advanced to the semifinal round for individual participants, finishing second in her group and placing in the top eight of all undergraduate competitors.

The opportunity to participate in a sales competition at this level was invaluable, Cosman said.

“What I was able to experience was unbelievable,” she added. “I grew as a professional and perfected skills in communication, time management and selling that today’s competitive job market demands.”

The competition, held at Kennesaw State University, drew 134 participants representing 67 colleges. A panel of judges evaluated how the students identified buyers’ needs, overcame objections and closed the deal during several rounds of mock meetings.

“I feel extremely honored and blessed to have represented the University on such a high level at the most prestigious sales competition in the nation,” Cuevo added. “Our accomplishments made this year truly speaks to the amazing passion of the faculty and staff to prepare us with the skills to not only excel at this competition, but also in the professional world. I have walked away a better, stronger and more confident individual, and I owe all of it to the Program for Excellence in Selling.”

In addition to competing, students used the trip as a networking opportunity, meeting professionals and recruiters in the sales industry.

“I got to see the results of my hard work and dedication pay off when companies located not only in the United States, but also in London, approached me and asked me to interview after my role play,” Cosman said. “This confirmed that what we learn in the Program for Excellence in Selling is what companies are looking for.”

The Program for Excellence in Selling is part of Bauer College’s Stephen Stagner Sales Excellence Institute. Students are admitted into the program after a rigorous admission process and gain hands-on experience in live selling, securing sponsorships for events as well as partnerships for the institute.

For 15 years, students from the program have participated in the National Collegiate Sales Competition, taking home first place in 2004, 2011 and 2012 — the same year that Bauer students swept the competition by earning top honors as a time along with first and second place individual wins. This year, Bauer Marketing Executive Professor Amy Vandaveer coached the students, along with PES alumni Grace Moceri and Saskya Gagneux.
