College Biannual Publication Receives Two Bronze Quill Awards
The Office of Communications at the C. T. Bauer College of Business at the University of Houston has been recognized by the Houston chapter of the International Association of Business Communicators. The office’s biannual publication Inside Bauer received Bronze Quill Awards in two categories during the association’s yearly awards gala on May 15 — an Award of Excellence for Multi-Audience Communication in the “Communication Management” division and an Award of Excellence in Publication Design in the “Communication Creative” division.
The Office of Communications oversees all of the college’s internal and external communications. The staff of 10 provides event coverage and promotion, web development, photography and videography services for the college.
In addition to these services, one of the office’s most extensive undertakings is the production of Inside Bauer. In fact, the magazine integrates nearly all aspects of the Office of Communications. Director of Communications Jessica Navarro explained, “Inside Bauer is a good opportunity to showcase the entirety of what our office does, through the online version of the magazine, which is optimized for the web, and links to videos and photo galleries related to each magazine story.”
Originally launched as a newsletter in Spring 2009, the publication has evolved significantly in recent years. Since converting to a magazine format in Fall 2011, the piece has expanded from 20 pages to more than 100 pages.
The new format has also translated to an enhanced production process. “We’re always in magazine mode,” Navarro said, explaining that each issue takes six months to create from start to finish. “We pull inspiration, both for content and design, from our favorite magazines, whether they’re business, academic, or something entirely different, and then we begin what I think is the most fun part of the process, content creation. We interview, photograph and immerse ourselves in all of the stories for that issue.”
The college entered the Fall/Winter 2013 issue of Inside Bauer magazine into two of three available divisions in the Bronze Quill Awards and placed in both. The Communication Management category assesses the strategic direction of a communication project, and the Communication Creative category recognizes creative talent and design that support communication objectives.
Navarro explained that the magazine was entered into these two categories because “we felt strongly that the magazine stretched beyond a technical tactic and really encompassed our team’s ability to produce a project that is driven by strategy and ROI.”
The magazine includes a broad range of features and articles that highlight the success of Bauer students, faculty, programs and community partners. And, as Navarro explains, the magazine itself is “a true testament of the ‘can do’ attitude that is characteristic of Bauer College, UH and the city of Houston. We have limited resources, but that hasn’t shaped our vision for the magazine. Our college deserves a magazine that can stand alongside not only the magazines of the nation’s leading business schools but also next to top business and technology titles that you’d find in Barnes & Noble. We challenge ourselves each issue to go further than we did for the previous one, and our small but mighty editorial team has done just that.”
She added: “Being recognized by IABC Houston, a highly respected professional organization with a thriving local chapter, is a real acknowledgement that our hard work on Inside Bauer is not only appreciated by the college’s stakeholders but by our peers in marketing and communications as well.”
