College and University Leaders Encourage More than 900 Bauer Graduates During Convocation Ceremony
The C. T. Bauer College of Business recognized nearly 1,000 graduating students on May 15 during a convocation ceremony.
The event was part of a new tradition for the University of Houston, as individual colleges held convocation ceremonies that led to a university-wide commencement celebration at TDECU Stadium.
Bauer College Dean Latha Ramchand gave opening remarks, noting the special relationship the college has with its students.
“Today, you graduate from a very special college and university, a college that has transformed you and that you have transformed during your stay here,” she said. “Here at Bauer, we — rather, you — have told us that this is a place like no other, a magical place, a place ‘Where Awesome Happens.’”
She then led the crowd in a call-and-repeat, asking the audience to respond to her call of “Bauer is…” with “Where Awesome Happens!”. After a rousing reply, Ramchand shared with students the value of their degrees.
“With your degree from Bauer, you have everything you need and more to succeed beyond your wildest dreams,” she added. “You are qualified, and you have everything you need to lead, but most importantly, with a degree from Bauer College and the University of Houston, you have the ability to change the world.”
UH System Chancellor and UH President Renu Khator served as keynote speaker at the convocation, describing to Bauer graduates the common qualities she has noticed in most successful people.
“I don’t know of one person who is successful who hasn’t fallen,” Khator said. “Everybody will fall; that’s life. What separates people who are successful are those who get up and who have the courage to fall again. That’s what is going to make you wildly successful.”
Khator ended her speech by encouraging to reach for the stars and to dream big.
“Dream as big as possible, never quit and always remember to be humble,” she added.
