May 14 Commencement Ceremony Will Recognize UH Bauer Graduates
The University of Houston C.T. Bauer College of Business will recognize its Spring 2011 graduates at a commencement ceremony on May 14 in Hofheinz Pavilion on the University of Houston campus.
The University of Houston recently restored the esteemed tradition of General Commencement as a way for the university to honor all graduates and achievements in a grand celebration.
UH System Chancellor and UH President Renu Khator will honor the accomplishments of the graduating class with a keynote address. Bauer College Interim Dean Latha Ramchand will congratulate the undergraduate, graduate and doctoral degree candidates and present them to the president for the bestowal of their degrees.
Bauer College congratulates all graduating students who have demonstrated integrity and perseverance in the pursuit of their degrees and will continue to make the college proud as leaders in their communities.

Outstanding MS Finance StudentQuyen Thi Do Nguyen
Quyen Nguyen began to pursue her passion of finance in 1998, graduating with a BA in accounting with a GPA of 3.8. While earning her MS in Finance, Quyen has been working at the CPA, and CFA Level I. During her time here at Bauer, Quyen was an active member of Beta Gamma Sigma, an international honor society serving business programs. Membership is the highest recognition a business student anywhere in the world can receive. Nguyen competed in the 2008 Investment Research Challenge and placed first at the State and National level and went on to place third at the Global level of the competition sponsored by the CFA Institute.
Outstanding MBA StudentAndrew Cobos
Andrew is graduating from the UH dual degree program for law and business, with degrees as a Master of Business Administration and as a Doctor of Jurisprudence. Andrew is on track to graduate from the Law Center in the top third of his class and graduate from the Bauer MBA program with honors – he has completed this demanding program in three years instead of the expected four. At the law center, Andrew devoted well over five hundred hours to assisting Harris county residents with their legal and business problems. Andrew also spearheaded the JD/MBA outreach program. Andrew participated in many organizations, competitions, and opportunities at the Law Center and at Bauer College. He served as President of the Military Law Society and as a member of numerous other clubs and organizations, including the Real-Estate Club. Additionally, Andrew was a semifinalist in an intercollegiate Moot Court competition, served as the alumni-relations editor for the Houston Journal of International Law, acquired certifications in mediation and arbitration, conducted independent research for professors, and tutored first-year law students in Constitutional Law. In June 2010, the Governor of Texas appointed Andrew to the University of Houston System Board of Regents to represent the voice of over 65,000 students in the UH System. In addition to serving as a Regent, Andrew was also appointed as the Chairman of the UH Young Professionals for Political Action and served as a coordinator for the UH Speakers Corps. Over the course of the past year, Andrew devoted over 550 hours of service to the University of Houston.
Andrew would like to thank the excellent faculty and staff at Bauer and at the Law Center for their continued support of his past, present and future achievements. In particular, Andrew would like to thank Marian Newman for being an awesome advisor and Professors Saleha Khumawala and Bill Alexander for their invaluable support and guidance.
Outstanding MS ACCY StudentAnthony Giroux
Anthony Giroux was raised in Houston. He took a scenic route to the accounting profession by first earning a Bachelor’s of Arts in Economics from the University of Texas and then coming to the University of Houston where he pursued his MS Accountancy & Taxation degree. Anthony, who has a 4.0 GPA, worked full time as an analyst for a small local company while pursuing his MS Accountancy & Taxation degree, which makes his accomplishment all the more remarkable. He decided to concentrate on Taxation thanks to Dr. Newberry, Dr. Pratt and Dr. Meade.
Outstanding EMBA Student (Program I)Tracy Lalasz
A native Chicagoan, Tracy received her bachelor’s degree in Economics from the University of Houston. She has spent 16 years with Legal Access /Legal Ease, a Houston based employee benefits company focused on legal and financial services for employees personal matters. Tracy currently serves as Sr. Vice President of Operations, with particular focus on developing strategic relationships with insurance carriers, creating operating efficiencies through internally developed technology and innovating new service delivery methods. She also acts as strategy advisor for the internet start-up Flavorgate, Inc. Tracy will earn her EMBA May 2011.
Outstanding EMBA Student (Program II)Alberto Franco-Fuenmayor
Alberto Franco-Fuenmayor is a Global Technical Product Manager at Baker Hughes (BHI). He supports BHI’s ongoing commitment to quality and reliability. He has a Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering from UH. His professional career spans 10 years of leadership and technical roles with global responsibilities including two and half years of project management experience and three years of global strategic marketing and product line management. He is an active member of several organizations and is a recipient of over 10 BHI high performance awards.
