Video Wall, News Center in Melcher Hall Named for Strategic Financial Group
Within the busy lobby of Melcher Hall, the video news wall has long been an important place for C. T. Bauer College of Business students to congregate. But a recent gathering had a special impact: Strategic Financial Group (SFG) and parent company MassMutual have lent their name to the high visibility wall, solidifying an already strong partnership with Bauer College and sending a message to students that the company considers it an important relationship.
SFG president J.K. McAndrews said a large percentage of the company’s recent hires have come from Bauer. “We’re delighted to be a sponsor and look forward to a long and healthy association,” he said. “Our internship program has had some terrific students from UH. Hopefully we send them out with some knowledge and we benefit by recruiting some of them back.”
One indication of Bauer students’ success as interns is that each and every scholarship that is awarded to high-performing students each year has gone to Bauer students, he said.
Bauer Dean Arthur Warga alluded to the prominence of the video wall, saying, “When our students come through, this is where they gather, this is where they come to get an update and find out about an opportunity or new programs. It really has played a crucial role for the thousands of students who come by each day. This wall is strategic and now it represents a partnership for the students.”
Associate Dean for Undergraduate Studies Frank Kelley noted that the wall of flat screen televisions and revolving stock ticker nearby have a big impact on students when they first arrive at Bauer.
“They are coming from high schools, from community colleges. This wall sets the tone for a business environment and it really is a game changer for a lot of students who are first in family (to attend college) and don’t have a business background,” he said.
The key role played by people like Susan Tasson, SFG recruiting director, and Fields Leake, SFG sales manager, can’t be overestimated, said Bauer’s Alumni Development Director John O’Dell.
“Fields has mentored and cajoled no telling how many of our graduates, encouraging them to be the best they can be…” he said.
“They got it, they understood, there’s something important going on over here.”
The Strategic Financial commitment highlights a few remaining opportunities for naming in Melcher Hall: displays for Circle of Honor members, Bauer Society members and 1927 Society members.
Still available for sponsorship in Michael J. Cemo Hall (currently under construction): one classroom, a testing center and 18 interview rooms.
