Eddie Martinez, a Bauer College of Business finance senior, has earned $10,000 from the CFP® Board Center for Financial Planning’s Deena Jo Heide-Diesslin Foundation Scholarship, which supports students in underrepresented populations who are pursuing a career in financial planning.

Martinez is the first in his family to attend college and first became interested in financial planning as a hobby.

“I just started reading lots of books on the subject,” he said. “Eventually, I started volunteering to facilitate courses at my church, and learned that I liked financial planning so much that I decided I wanted to do this professionally. I really like helping demystifying the topic for others.”

Martinez said his Bauer College courses have helped him to gain the professional skills need to pursue his career goals.

“All my professors here at Bauer have been amazing. If I had to name one person, it would be finance Clinical Assistant Professor John Lopez,” he added. “His guidance and advice have been so helpful to me. He helped me find a great internship, wrote me a letter of recommendation and always makes time to answer my countless questions.”

With graduation around the corner, Martinez is now planning to enter the workforce.

“I currently have a great internship with Mosaic Advisors, and I’m hoping that will lead to a full-time position as a para planner or support advisor there,” he said. “They have been extremely supportive and flexible with my school schedule. My number one professional goal is to continue studying to sit for CFP exam early next year.”
