On Bauer Business Focus – Bruce Butler, PhD, Vice President of Research and Technology with the UT Health Science Center at Houston spoke to KUHF Business Reporter Ed Mayberry about the strong demand for lab space by startup companies in Houston.
In the year since it opened, the Health Science Center’s Biotechnology Commercialization Center has leased three-quarters of its space and nearly all of its lab space to young companies. Tenants include one creating a new heart valve and another working on a test using saliva to spot breast cancer.
“This took off faster than I thought it would,” said Butler. He said that indicated the need for more space to create an environment to nurture startups, and build a cadre of experienced executives and entrepreneurs.
“We need a whole cluster of such facilities,” Butler said.
