Vorys Law Firm Partner Jackie Ford stopped by Bauer Business Focus to discuss the ways that employers can minimize the risk of workplace violence.
The topic has been widely discussed since the recent tragedy that occurred in Virginia. In August, a news reporter and photojournalist were shot and killed on national television by a former co-worker.
Ford explained that is it very difficult to predict, even for professional psychiatrists, if someone is potentially threatening or if they are just anti-social and awkward. She went on to explain the American’s with Disabilities Act and how there is an exception in this act for people that pose a direct threat.
Ford explained that the hiring process is the most important phase in reducing the risks of situations like what occurred in Virginia.
“In addition to the reference checks and the background checks, the third thing you can do [to weed out the potentially harmful applicants] is a Google check,” Ford said.
