On Bauer Business Focus – A conversation on navigating a start-up with Ed Mayberry, business reporter for KUHF 88.7 FM
Houston has the reputation of being one of the hottest cities in which to do business. For entrepreneurs, it’s a place where rubber meets the road and big ideas become reality.
The University of Houston Small Business Development Center helps keep Houston business thriving by offering consulting and training to budding entrepreneurs and emerging businesses.
UH-SBDC director Roberta Skebo has worked with companies at all phases of the growth cycle and has heard nearly every question you can imagine – How do I get more customers? How do I go international? How do I get financing in this market?
“These are things we hear daily,” says Skebo. “And many entrepreneurs walk through our doors and say ‘I want to open my own business. What’s my first step?’”
The UH-SBDC offers free consulting to help these clients figure out where to start. “Most of the time we will suggest starting off with a workshop that teaches business fundamentals like writing a business plan, market research, budgeting and securing licenses and permits,” says Skebo.
“We also work with established entrepreneurs who want to expand their business.”
Skebo says part of her role is staying abreast of what the latest concerns are for her clients and tailoring the UH-SBDC’s offerings to fit. The UH-SBDC calls on successful entrepreneurs and industry experts to lead workshops like their popular restaurant series and a constantly evolving social media series.
“Luckily for us, entrepreneurs by nature enjoy sharing ideas, best practices and success stories. Businesses come in with very innovative ideas. We learn from them, and they learn from us.”
