Oprah Winfrey is a media mogul, passionate philanthropist…and now queen of the NBA? Media confirmations indicate Winfrey, David Geffen and Larry Ellison have placed a group bid for the L.A. Clippers after it was announced that Donald Sterling has been banned for life from the league.

If Winfrey does in fact win her bid, she would be one of two black primary owners in the NBA with the other being Shaquille O’Neal, who owns a minority stake in the Sacramento Kings. After such a highly publicized negative incident, many wonder how having Oprah’s presence in the league would impact the image of the NBA brand.

Bauer College marketing professor Partha Krishnamurthy is available to discuss brand failures and image impact on brands.

As college seniors prepare for finals and commencement, a group of C. T. Bauer College of Business Management Information Systems (MIS) students also found time to give back to their community. As part of a “learning through service” semester project, students partnered with Executive Service Corps Houston (ESCH) non-profit consulting services to assist non-profits in building databases to track volunteers and donations as well as launch new/or improved websites.

Local non-profits included Target Hunger, Crossroads and Urban Outreach Inc., all organizations that address social issues like at-risk youth, unemployment, hunger and poverty in the great Houston area. After graduation, these students will be able to utilize their real-world consulting experience as they begin their careers.

UH Bauer students who participated in the course, non-profit representatives and ESCH mentors are available to discuss how their partnership on this project benefits the Houston community. Watch here:
