UH Bauer College students will have a chance to meet face to face with representatives from more than 150 companies at the Fall 2008 Business Career Fair on Thursday, Sept. 25.
The Career Fair will be held by the Rockwell Career Center at the University of Houston Hilton Hotel between 2:30 and 5:30 p.m. and is open to all business majors. The list of companies participating in the event has continued to grow over the last five years from about 50 to over 150 this year.
Each year, the Career Fair draws more and more students interested in meeting recruiters from some of the business world’s most highly respected companies, including leaders in accounting, finance, marketing and other fields. In 2007, more than 2,000 students attended the Fall Career Fair.
“Anyone can benefit from going to the Career Fair,” said Jamie Belinne, assistant dean and executive director of the Rockwell Career Center. “The companies are really looking at juniors and seniors, but we’re telling sophomores to attend as well so they can start considering internships for the future.”
Students should follow a few tips to make the most of their time at the Career Fair, Belinne added. “We always recommend that students review the list of companies prior to the Career Fair to maximize their time there,” she said. “There’s no way you can go from table to table and see everyone, so they need to decide before who they want to talk to.”
Students must wear business attire and are encouraged to have several copies of their resumes on hand, Belinne said. She also suggests students take business cards from the recruiters to make following up with each company an easy task.
It isn’t likely that students were offered a job or internship on the spot at the fair, but it is an opportunity to network and make important contacts to secure an interview, she added.
Before the Career Fair gets underway, the Career Center will host a “Reverse Career Fair” from 1:30 – 2:30 p.m. in the UH Hilton Hotel. The reverse career fair is unique to Bauer College and highlights student organizations and centers of excellence. Recruiters are able to stop at these tables and gather more information.
A complete list of participating companies can be found on the Rockwell Career Center site.
