Finance/Management Senior Dmitrovic on Commencement, Career and Cougar Pride

Houston and UH Bauer have become home for Slovenian Lina Dmitrovic, who will participate in commencement on May 14.

After only five years in the United States and a quick introduction to country’s language, culture and education system, Lina Dmitrovic will earn a bachelor of business administration degree from the University of Houston C. T. Bauer College of Business on May 14.

A double major in finance and management, Dmitrovic was born and raised in Slovenia, a country in Central Europe touching the Alps and bordering the Mediterranean. She moved to Houston with the goal of getting a high-quality education that would prepare her for the workforce.

It was no easy task adapting to an entirely new culture and language, she said, but the diverse student population on campus made the transition smoother.

“Being a student at Bauer College has been a great experience,” Dmitrovic said. “I am amazed at how culturally diverse our school is. I’ve learned to respect each and every person and to stay open minded.”

In her time at the college, Dmitrovic has not only done well — she’s thrived, earning a place on the Dean’s List and a scholarship from the Global Energy Management Institute in 2010. She is also a member of student organizations Finance Association and The Energy Association.

Her success in the country will continue after graduation, as she begins a job at Ernst & Young as a consultant in September and looks toward new educational and personal goals.

“Five years from now, I see myself with a master degree, continuing to climb the corporate ladder and have fulfilling family life,” Dmitrovic said. “In the next 20 years, I want to return back to Europe, preferably working for an American company. And then with the knowledge I gained overseas, start my own business!”

It is apparent that her success thus far has been no accident, but rather a result of her hard work and dedication, and a lot of careful planning.

“A very important note that I carry with myself is to always successfully balance my private life with my professional one,” she added. “I am determined to have both. It is not going to be easy, but with proper organizing and planning, everything is possible!”

Her support system, which consists of her family, her boyfriend Luka, and the students and faculty that she’s encountered during her time at UH Bauer, has played an integral role in helping Dmitrovic achieve her success. These relationships, she said, have helped her to see past her limitations and become more confident in her capabilities.

“The most impressive aspect of Bauer College to me is the relationship between students and professors,” she said. “All faculty members are very approachable and, more importantly, they support students’ quest for knowledge and their thirst for learning.”

For Dmitrovic, graduating this May is but another milestone in her life aspirations — it has been a long and far journey, but it is not close to being over yet. She hopes that other international students can share the same enjoyment she has had on their own journey.

“When coming from abroad, don’t get discouraged by early hiccups!” she said. “Stay open-minded; respect others and the country’s culture. Find a close group of friends to spend time together, so that you are not feeling lonely. And always remember where you are coming from, be proud of it and ask questions!”
